Itinerary

As you begin your descent over the pristine landscapes of the Greater Vancouver area, take a moment to fathom all of the marine life thriving in this region. From orca whales to otters to salmon and plenty more, the wildlife and natural typography are core aspects of what makes British Columbia so unique.

Upon your arrival at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), you will be greeted by your local guide. This week you will be hosted by native marine biologists as you study marine sciences and oceanography around the Vancouver area. From the airport, you will take the SkyTrain to your accommodation downtown.

Kick off your first day in the city Vancouver-style at one of the cafes in the Gastown area. Afterward, you will walk over to Coal Harbor. From here, you will have stunning views of the water and mountains in the background. But that’s not all — it’s about to get better as you will be heading out on a float plane ride.

As you fly above overlooking Metro Vancouver, your guide will give you a breakdown of what types of marine species live in which areas, as well as which areas have seen the most changes over recent years. Following your float plane ride, you will connect with members of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to take a closer look at the region’s current initiatives to support sustainable fishing. In addition, you will learn about the current issues this sector is facing, such as pollution, overfishing and more.

Today you will be checking out the iconic Vancouver Aquarium. On-site, several exhibits showcase the different ocean typography and species from British Columbia all the way to the Amazon Jungle. While you’re here, you will get a behind the scenes tour with one of the aquarium’s marine researchers to learn more about the research, conservation and marine animal rehabilitation initiatives in place.

In the afternoon, take a few hours to cruise around one of the local gems in the city, Stanley Park. Encompassing the park is a 9 km paved circuit, which is great either on foot or by bike. Surrounded by the waters of English Bay and Burrard Inlet, you will check out the various tidal ecosystems surrounding the park and discuss them with your guide.

Today you will take part in half-day (three to five-hour) orca whale watching excursion departing from Steveston, a small Japanese fishing village located in South Richmond. Also referred to as killer whales, orcas frequent the channels throughout the area.

As you cruise through the waters on a high-speed boat, discuss the importance of the killer whales in the ecosystem as well as the potential threats they face due to industry, climate change and more with your guide. Following your whale watching excursion, take some time to walk around the village and check out the Steveston Cannery. The area’s livelihood depends on the fishing industry, but with rising temperatures and overfishing, the fish stock levels may continue to decrease. Find out more while you’re here.

Today you will meet with political party members of the environmentally focused Green Party. With a focus on creating a more sustainable future for Canadians emphasizing environment, during this meeting, you will gain a greater understanding of the current risks Canada faces relating to crude oil, water pollution and more.

In the afternoon, you will be taking in views of the city from an alternative perspective. Departing from Granville Island, you will be able to set out onto the water either with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP). If you choose to kayak, you will have the option to take a bag with you to collect any floating trash. Afterward, check out the various bars, restaurants and cultural shops around Granville Island.

Start your morning with a fresh coffee before you meet up with faculty members from the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Environmental Sciences department.
