Today you’ll arrive in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. The city is made up of more than a dozen smaller islands connected by bridges and boats or ferries. Almost one million people call this city home. Spend your first day in Sweden roaming this cosmopolitan city. Explore the city center and streets, admire the colorful architecture, and find an authentic restaurant for your first Swedish meal.
You’ll spend the whole day in Stockholm today with your guide leading the way, showing you some of the city’s most dynamic sites. You’ll start in the part of the city known as Gamla Stan, one of the oldest parts of Stockholm dating back to medieval times. There is plenty to do in this area, and you’ll spend most of the morning exploring it, including the colorful buildings surrounding Stortorget, the oldest public square in the city.
After your visit to Gamla Stan, the group will tour Skansen, an open-air museum dedicated to the lives of generations past in Sweden. You’ll visit the Vasa Museum to learn all about the country’s King Adolphus and its warship Vasa. The Medieval Museum will be the group’s next stop where you’ll learn about the history of Sweden from the 1400s up to the Industrial Revolution. The group will end the day with a visit to the Swedish Royal Palace, where the king still resides.
This morning, the group will travel south by bus to the town of Linkoping. Here you’ll tour several castles including Linkopings Slott, parts of which date back to the 10th century, as well as Ekenas Slott and Ljungs Slott. After lunch, the group will tour Linkopings Cathedral, which dates back to medieval times. You’ll also visit Vreta Klosters Kyrka, one of the oldest medieval churches in Sweden. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to stroll around Linkoping perhaps visiting its open air markets or public squares.
The group will continue its trek south this morning to Jonkoping. The two-hour ride will afford you the time to kick back and enjoy the scenery of the Swedish countryside. Once you arrive in Jonkoping, your guide will lead you to the Jonkopings Lans Museum, which is as unique inside as it is outside. After lunch, the group will head to the Lake Vattern and its main beach where you can choose to spend time in a number of ways. You might also choose to explore nearby Rosenlunds rosarium and admire the gardens there.
Another two-hour bus ride delivers you to Gothenburg today, the country’s second biggest city with a metro area population of one million. Gothenberg is the home of Volvo, and the city has a museum dedicated to the car company. There are many universities located here too. The group will tour the Museum of World Culture and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. After the museum tours, you’ll head to Kungsportsavenyn, the main avenue in Gothenburg for a free afternoon of exploring the rest of what the city has to offer.
Today you’ll have the time of your life at Liseberg, the oldest amusement park in all of Scandinavia. The park has been in operation since 1923 and attracts more than 3 million visitors a year. Spend the day riding roller coasters, water rides, enjoying all the attractions and getting your fill of Scandinavian versions of fair food. After a long day in the park, the group will board the train back to Stockholm.
After an adventurous week in Sweden, it’s time to say adjo, which is Swedish for goodbye. Your guide will deliver you safely to the airport in time for your departing flight. While you’re waiting for your flight, have one final kanelbulle in the airport, the Swede’s beloved version of the cinnamon roll.
Travel abroad to the magical land of Sweden. You’ll spend time in the country’s capital Stockholm as well as several smaller cities to the west. You’ll learn how to fika, and gain a healthy respect for the country’s innovative spirit, including all the ways Swedes treat environmental issues, and its devotion to green fuels.
