After arriving in Ushiaia you will begin your adventure navigating the Beagle Channel – a strait separating the main island of Tierra de Fuego from various other small islands that are scattered between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This region has come to be the starting point of modern-day explorers venturing to Antarctica.
The tundra ecosystem of the Beagle Channel is home to sea lions. seals, penguins and occasionally minke whales or Peale’s dolphins. Many sea birds can also be spotted on tours of the channel including the majestic albatross. Your group will learn about the impact on this ecosystem from climate change in addition to glacial movement.
Hop into a well heated land rover as you cruise through Tierra del Fuego National Park in search of forests, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to gain a well rounded understanding of the fuegian ecosystem as you explore Lapataia Bay, Roca Lake and Ensenada Bay to name a few.
In the afternoon you will reach Harberton Ranch where you will take a zodiac to the Maritllo Island in the middle of the Beagle Channel– home to a colony of Magellanic and Gentoo penguins. These amazing animals gather each year from November to March in this exact spot! Learn from your guide about this penguin colony’s migration patterns. En route back to shore, keep your eye out for whales!
Expect an early morning departure from Ushuaia for a full day of off-road excursion to Lakes Fagnanao & Escondido. Escondido Lake is located at the foot of the Garibaldi mountain pass and is surrounded by the Fuegian Andes. As you cross through the Garibaldi Pass at an altitude of 1,476 feet you will have stunning views of the valley below. Lake Fagnano is one of the largest in the world and occupies an active tectonic depression which separates the South American and Scotia Plates. Here your guide will give you a glimpse into the past as you learn about local history and how the lake’s residents survive in such a brutal climate.
