Arenal Volcano Adventure
Prepárate Para una Aventura!
After the nearby Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968, tourists from around the world started flocking to La Fortuna hoping to get a glimpse of rumbling smokestacks and creeping lava. Although the mountain stopped spewing lava in 2010, adventurers still love this lush, sunshine-soaked area, making La Fortuna one of the most popular vacation destinations in all of Costa Rica. Trek through thick rainforests to the base of an active volcano, discover exotic wildlife, soak in dreamy hot springs and spend your nights relaxing poolside in a postcard-worthy mountain town. Come see for yourself why so many are drawn to La Fortuna!
After landing in the charming Costa Rican capital of San Jose, travel to the quaint town of La Fortuna. Just a few hours northwest of the capital, La Fortuna is undoubtedly one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful destinations, teeming with colorful gardens and views of the mammoth Arenal Volcano around every bend. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your hotel before capping your night with dinner at a lively La Fortuna restaurant. From fine dining to ultra-casual eats, La Fortuna has an almost endless variety of dining options, with something for every taste and every budget.
Spend the day taking part in three adventurous activities! First, trek over decades-old lava at the world-famous Arenal Volcano. For safety reasons, all trails around the volcano are limited to the base, but fear not – the views are spectacular, and hiking the base makes this an enjoyable and relatively easy trek for hikers of all levels. Then take a short ride to the 200-foot La Fortuna Waterfall. Descend to the base of the falls and relax and play in its emerald waters. Spend the rest of your day at the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, where you’ll cross through carefully preserved rainforest trails, across six hanging bridges, and stand in awe at striking 360-degree views of the park and the nearby volcano.
Start your day with a visit to Arenal Volcano National Park, where you can spend some more time exploring the area surrounding the mysterious Arenal Volcano. Located just outside La Fortuna, within the Arenal Conservation area, this incredible National Park is brimming with exotic flora and fauna, and is covered with walking trails and endless photo opportunities.
Just outside the park, discover Costa Rica’s largest network of naturally flowing thermal mineral springs at Tabacón Hot Springs. Spend time floating and relaxing in any of the five main springs, all created from highly mineralized, volcanically-heated water. Your body and spirit will thank you!
Wake early and head to the nearby Boragin Trail, known as one of the best places to see sloths in all of Costa Rica. Follow your guides as they help you use a high-tech spotting scope to look for the sweet smiling faces of the Costa Rican sloth and other exotic wildlife, such as toucans, giant iguanas, howler monkeys and jungle frogs.
Return to La Fortuna in the afternoon to spend the rest of your day soaking in the charm of Costa Rica. Stroll through the town’s many souvenir shops and cafes and take a rejuvenating dip in the pool. Before turning in for your final night, sample some Gallo Pinto – the national dish of Costa Rica.
After your morning breakfast and checkout, say goodbye to this picture perfect village and head to San Jose, where you’ll catch your flight home.
