Itinerary

Chuuk is one of four islands making up the Federated States of Micronesia. As you arrive today, your local guide will be waiting for you to transfer you to your hotel for your stay.

The afternoon is yours to explore the area, relax on the beach, or chat with some locals.

In the evening, you’ll meet with your group and guide for authentic local cuisine. Your guide will share details of your schedule as well as provide tips about local customs and safety.

Today you will make your way into the city center where you will be teaching your classes. Following a short orientation and training, you will meet the students you will be teaching. Classes will be every morning with free time every afternoon.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll get to explore the city and surrounding area. Today you will visit Truk Lagoon, a beautiful beach area. Walk on the beach, snorkeling or maybe try your hand at diving in the lagoon. The area is known for its sunken shipwreck from a World War II battle.

As you get to know your students, and they get to know you, share stories about your lives — how they are different and how they are the same.

Following a morning of teaching, you head to Kuop Atoll to see the local plant and animal life. Learn how to identify these species and how they are important to the local people.

After classes today, you will have free time to explore Chuuk and the area’s beaches.

After another fun day of teaching, you will fly to Kosrae. Here you will engage with a new group of students but with the same organization.

Today you will meet your new students on the island of Kosrae. After lessons this morning, walk around the Utwe-Walung Marine Park and stop by the Green Banana Paper Company for an interesting tour. Learn how they make handmade products that are both sustainable and eco-friendly. You might want to buy a few souvenirs to take home!

If time allows you might want to walk through Yela Valley Ka Forest and explore Hiroshi’s Point.

Today is your last day of teaching. Think of the difference you have made in the lives of your students in Micronesia – you have inspired them to pursue educational and career success through your efforts.

After a luncheon specially prepared by your students to say “thank you” and “goodbye,” you will have the afternoon to relax before one more excursion.

This evening you will fly to the island of Kolonia.

Today you will visit the area of petroglyphs left from an ancient civilization. The petroglyphs are chipped into the basalt rocks depicting mostly weapons, human feet, faces and fish. There are no informational displays here so your imagination can create the stories being told.

In the afternoon you will visit the Pilen Seleur Eel Pools of Pohnpei and Mt. Pwusehn Malek. The area is radically different from Chuuk where you first arrived. Hopefully, you have noticed the stark differences between the different islands on your journey.

We hope you have had an educational and fun week. Enjoy a final breakfast with your group and guides while you share your favorite memories and what you have learned. It is time to head to the airport for your departure flight home.

Micronesia is a nation many have never heard of. Consisting of several small islands in the barrier reef, it is home to a proud but struggling population. The people appreciate the efforts of teachers like yourself to inspire them and make a difference in their futures.

On this trip to Micronesia, you will volunteer to work with the youth of Micronesia, teaching them life skills that are desperately needed on the islands. You will also have time to explore some of the area’s beautiful landscapes. Enjoy the opportunities to snorkel and dive to see life under the ocean surfaces. Leave knowing you have made a difference by  volunteer teaching in Micronesia this week!
