Engineering the Titanic in the U.K.

Stem Studies across the U.K.

ADD AN IMPACT!
The U.K. is a historically powerful nation that brings in millions of tourists -- and their money -- every year. Despite this, cruel austerity measures disproportionately affect thousands of impoverished people. Add an impact to your STEM studies adventures in the U.K. by volunteering with a food bank or a charity that helps the homeless.

Itinerary

You’ll land in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the largest city in the country. It’s a beautiful city with a rich history which includes the Titanic. Before you jump in, head to St. George’s Market, which has over 150 vendors and will give you a taste of the town.

It’s time to hop on board and see the sights of the Titanic! You’ll go to The Titanic Belfast Experience, a museum that draws together special effects and full-scale reconstructions to give you the full Titanic experience. You’ll see a submersible showing what the ship looks like now on the ocean floor. Afterward, you’ll jump in a car and head to Cobh to continue your adventure.

This morning, your first stop is the Cobh Heritage Center. The Titanic docked in Cobh when the town was called Queenstown, and 123 people boarded the ship. At the Heritage Center, you’ll learn about these passengers and how the city plays into the vessel’s journey.

Next, you’ll go to the Cobh Titanic Memorial Garden. It overlooks the anchorage site of the Titanic where the last passengers boarded. Pay attention to the glass wall where the names of the 123 passengers who boarded here are engraved.

Before you leave Ireland, it’s time to volunteer. You’ll clean up a beach near where the Titanic docked for the last time. Cleaning up beaches helps the local community and keeps the ocean clean, and you’ll have fun doing it! Then, you’ll hop on a plane to Southampton, England for the next part of your journey.

To learn about Southampton’s part in the Titanic’s voyage, you’ll head to SeaCity Museum. The museum hosts a fantastic 1:25 scale interactive model of the ship. You can also learn about Southampton’s port and all of the ships that docked there.

Put on your walking shoes! Today you’ll be walking Southampton’s Titanic Trail, which will take you to relevant sites around the city. You’ll visit many memorials, including the Titanic Musicians’ Memorial and the Titanic Crew Memorial, as well as the dock from which the Titanic departed.

It’s time to go home, but you can use what you’ve learned about the Titanic to motivate you to help others! Maybe you could help children get fresh water, give warm socks to homeless people, or continue cleaning up beaches. Bon voyage!

The majestic RMS Titanic sank in 1912 after it struck an iceberg, and it’s been a source of tragic fascination ever since. On one of your overseas adventures, travel around England and Northern Ireland where you’ll visit many historically significant sites and see numerous artifacts related to ship’s fateful journey.
