Environmental Studies in the Canary Islands

ADD AN IMPACT!
Even in the vast and harsh deserts of Lanzarote, domestic animals flourish. However, unlike in the United States, many are mistreated or homeless. Add an impact to your trip by helping to build a donkey rescue station or volunteering at a natural dog hotel.

Itinerary

Your global travel has begun! As you descend into Lanzarote, you’ll be impressed by the desert and mountainous terrain of the land that will be your home for the next week. A local guide will be waiting to meet you at the airport to transfer you to your villa-style, bungalow accommodation.

After unpacking and taking some time to rest, the afternoon is all yours. Have a swim on the beach, kick back on the terrace, or enjoy a coffee at a local cafe. During the evening, you will meet with your group and local guides at a restaurant to enjoy authentic Canarian cuisine.

Today, your trek begins. You’ll be transferred to Playa Blanca, a village that’s overlooked by the majestic Red Mountains. The area experienced volcanic eruptions over 1,500 years ago leaving behind incredible geographic features and making it an excellent start for your hike. Travel through the lava field of Rubicon Plain – one of the oldest regions of the island. As you continue, you’ll reach El Golfo, aka the Green Lagoon, a lake that was formed by trapped sea water. After a long day, you’ll head back to your villa and enjoy a hearty dinner as a reward for your efforts.

Today, you will head out to the central volcanic crust of Lanzarote. Step across small lava stones that have a lava stream lying below. You’ll view the Island’s famous volcanic vineyards where ash pits shelter grape vines, because farmers use soft ash to hold moisture for their agriculture. Try some of the figs and almonds on the landscape. Finally, you’ll make it to the base of Guardilama Volcano. Take a small path to its summit with views of the western Fire Mountains, then you’ll trek down to the village of La Asomado to enjoy a late lunch before catching a shuttle back to your accommodation.

You will start your walking tour in the central desert of Lanzarote, so be sure to bring water and wear sunscreen! The wild trail is surrounded by a variety of xerophytic plants including the cactus. After touring through the town of San Bartolome, you’ll trek from sandy fields to lava fields before you finally reach the ancient capital of Teguise. It contains several whitewashed buildings as well as a central square. Take some free time to explore before being transferred to the Cesar Manrique Foundation. It is a house built on top of volcanic bubbles! Learn about the history of the artist-architect who built this building before heading back to your accommodation for dinner.

You’ll begin your trek today on the spectacular Famara Cliffs, boasting the highest elevation in the country. You’ll trek along the coastal paths to enjoy the magnificent views. From here, you’ll be able to view the African coast’s Alegranza Nature Park. Then, start your steep descent to the Valley of a Thousand Palms. The oasis town traditionally plants a palm tree each time a child is born, and features gardens, fruit trees and markets galore. Explore this incredible town before visiting the Jardin de Cactus, a sculpture inspired by the world’s spiciest plants. Enjoy lunch on the terrace before heading back to your accommodation.

For your final full day in Lanzarote, no more walking is necessary. Indeed, today is all about sailing the seas! Take a sailboat ride across the strait of El Rio to land at Caleta del Sebo. Rather than wandering specific footpaths, you’ll have time to explore beaches and dunes. This island was initially known as Treasure Island as pirates once visited to bury treasure, so keep an eye out for gold! Explore the town’s markets, snorkel the water, or suntan on the white beaches.

Your adventurous trek across Lanzarote has finally come to an end, and we are so sad to see you go. Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast with your group and local guides and converse about your favorite and most challenges parts of the trip. What knowledge will you take back with you? After breakfast, you head to the local airport to depart home. We hope to see you soon!

Lanzarote is a compelling island will extraordinary geology. Indeed, the location has over 300 volcanic cones, palm-filled valleys, and black lava fields to explore, making it the perfect place for an adventure.

On this Lanzarote trek, you will hike the Gaurdilama Volcano, explore the Valley of a Thousand Palms, and hike among the towering Femara Cliffs. Each day is action-packed, educational, and explorative. The days may require much effort and determination, but you’ll always have a luxury accommodation to return to. It’s the perfect mix between adventure and comfort, so start planning your global travel today!
