Itinerary

Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is a lively city with diverse attractions such as glorious Belle Époque buildings, the 18th-century architecture of the Old Town, communist giants like the Palace of Parliament, and glass towers topped by sky bars.

Explore the city either with the hop on/hop off sightseeing bus or a private city tour. Choose either the Ashes of Communism Tour (visit the Palace of Parliament, see massive structures and unhealed scars and learn about the last European dictator,) or the Charm of the Belle Époque Tour (19th century, beautiful architecture, and palaces). If time permits, visit the Village Museum and enjoy a wine tasting session (if 21+)

Take a ride to Sinaia and visit the gorgeous Peles Palace, the former private retreat of Romania’s royal family which is currently one of the most significant art collections in Eastern Europe.
Next head to Bran Castle and observe the stone giant guarding the passageway to Transylvania. While exploring the mighty castle, learn about the stories of Vlad the Impaler, the myth of Dracula, and the iconic figure of Queen Mary. After lunch, proceed to Brasov and see the charming streets of the Old Town after that enjoy the fantastic view of the entire city from the top of the White Tower.

You will begin your day by visiting Rasnov Citadel, a superb example of medieval reinforcement placed on the top of a hill. Next, go to Viscri’s Fortified Church (UNESCO monument) where you will truly feel like you’ve traveled back in time. Continue the journey as you explore local traditions during a stop at Saschiz (UNESCO) to enjoy a Romanian lunch. Following lunch you will venture to a Sighisoara (UNESCO), one of the best conserved medieval citadels in Europe. There are a few hotels and guesthouses inside the castle, among the fortifications, colorful streets, old workshops, gatehouses and Boehme cafes.

The first stop is at the fortified church (UNESCO World Heritage Centre) in Biertan. Next head to Sibiu the European capital of culture in 2007, another medieval marvel of Transylvania. The old city is surrounded by a well-preserved fortification of the 15th century. With a mix of baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture, the pedestrian free old town looks like medieval Vienna. Sibiu was ranked as the 8th most idyllic place to live in Europe by Forbes.

On your way back to Bucharest, pass through “the best road in the world” Carpathians on the Transfagarasan, enjoying the incredible scenery. On sunny days you can see the entire Transylvanian Plateau from the highest point, near the shore of a glacier lake. The Transfagarasan road is open between June and October. During November and May, you can return to Bucharest via Olt’s Valley – another amazing highway that crosses the southern Carpathian Mountains.
